In this analysis, nontraditional currencies include the renminbi, Canadian dollar, Australian dollar, Swiss franc and other currencies. The three groups sum to 100%.
Which currencies explain the rise?
The renminbi is only part of the story. Separating today's composition from changes over time reveals the role of other currencies.
Inside nontraditional reserves
The renminbi currently makes up 16.1% of nontraditional reserves. Other currencies make up the remaining 83.9%.
Q2 2026

Q1 2000 → Q4 2016
+4.9 ppBefore all five categories were separately identified
Q4 2016 → Q2 2026
+5.4 ppAll five categories are comparable
Each period shows the change in the combined nontraditional share. The earlier increase is not an increase in today's Other currencies category.
Over the full period, the renminbi can explain at most +2.1 pp (20.5%) of the increase. Other currencies explain at least +8.2 pp.
How is this upper bound calculated?
Subtract the renminbi's current share of 2.1% from the overall increase of +10.3 pp. Its initial share is unidentified but cannot be negative, so its increase cannot exceed its current share. This is a mathematical upper bound, not an estimated contribution that assumes the initial share was zero. The calculation includes exchange rate and price effects on shares.
The period we can break down by currency
Change the start quarter to see how each currency contributed to the change in the combined nontraditional share through the latest quarter.

Contribution = currency's percentage-point change ÷ net increase in the nontraditional share × 100. Negative contributions offset the increase; contributions can exceed 100% when other currencies decline. Percentages are shown as — when the total is unchanged or falls. Percentage-point changes use all world FX reserves as the denominator. Rounding may affect totals.
Beyond the dollar
The dollar is hidden initially to make smaller shares easier to read. The chart starts in Q4 2016, when all nine categories became separately identifiable.

What changed over your chosen period?
Compare the difference in currency shares in percentage points. This does not trace proceeds from dollar sales into other currencies.
The end quarter must be the same as or later than the start quarter. Selecting the same quarter gives a change of 0.0 percentage points for every currency.

Before reading the numbers
Shares are not transaction flows
Shares change with exchange rates, asset prices, reserve accumulation and trading. This page shows official observations without exchange rate adjustments and does not estimate actual transactions.
These reserves exclude gold
COFER excludes monetary gold, SDR holdings and reserve positions in the IMF. Individual countries' currency compositions and individual currencies within the other category, including the Korean won, are not disclosed.
Historical figures are revised too
From Q3 2025, the IMF imputes the currency composition of previously unallocated reserves, revising the series back to Q1 2000. This page uses a single revised vintage for the whole time series.
Not separately identified does not mean zero
The Australian and Canadian dollars are separately identified from Q4 2012, and the renminbi from Q4 2016. Earlier holdings are included in other currencies; we neither replace missing values with zero nor estimate them retrospectively.
Share of total FX reserves whose currency composition was imputed by the IMF in the latest quarter: 10.6%.
Sources and data
ChartKo aggregates IMF currency shares into three groups and calculates changes between periods. Displayed values are rounded to one decimal; calculations and CSV retain source precision. Rounded shares may not sum to 100%.
